Three Biggest Myths of Pregnancy and Chiropractic Care, Debunked
When you’re pregnant, whether it’s your first or fourth, you want to make sure you’re doing everything to keep you and baby healthy and safe. But what happens when you have an ache or pain that continues to get worse as the pregnancy progresses? Is it safer to see a chiropractor, or just ride it out?
Seeing a chiropractor during your pregnancy is not only safe, but a natural way to maintain your body’s vitality and strength-especially if the doctor specializes in prenatal care. But if you’re still unsure, below are the three biggest myths surrounding pregnancy and chiropractic care to help ease your mind.
1. MYTH: Chiropractic care will hurt my growing belly and the baby inside it.
TRUTH: A chiropractor who specializes in prenatal care will have equipment to accommodate your abdomen safely.
A chiropractor who specializes in prenatal care will know exactly how to adjust your body at each stage of your pregnancy to make sure you and baby are comfortable and safe. The chiropractor will have a hollowed-out pillow to rest your belly in when you are on your stomach during the adjustment to avoid unnecessary pressure on the abdomen.
2. MYTH: Chiropractic care is dangerous for my pregnancy and my baby.
TRUTH: While there are pressure points to be avoided during pregnancy, a chiropractor with expert knowledge in prenatal care will you keep you and baby safe and actually improve the birthing process.
A study published on the National Institute of Health stated, “ “Chiropractic evaluation and treatment during pregnancy may be considered a safe and effective means of treating common musculoskeletal symptoms that affect pregnant patients.”
It also stated that if a woman stated she had back pain during pregnancy, she was 3 times more likely to experience back labor, which can be extremely painful. Women who sought our chiropractic care during pregnancy also reported a 25% shorter labor. It can also significantly reduce the need for a cesarean, an invasive surgical procedure to deliver the baby.
3. MYTH: Pain is a normal part of pregnancy and chiropractic care won’t make a difference.
TRUTH: Minor aches are normal in pregnancy, but pain doesn’t have to be.
Chiropractic care helps the body heal from the inside, out, and over time will heal the pain that comes from pinched nerves, softened joints and muscle tension. A study published on the National Institute of Health stated that 50% of women experience back pain during pregnancy but only 21% of them seek care for their pain. Of those seen, 72% of women said they benefited from the care. Pregnancy changes a woman’s musculoskeletal system, altering the position of her pelvis, flexion of the hips and the cervical spine. It can also cause headaches, nausea, and insomnia, all of which can be addressed with chiropractic care.
It is important to note that if you are experiencing vaginal bleeding, ruptured amniotic membranes, cramping, sudden onset of pelvic pain, premature labor, placenta previa, placenta abruption, ectopic pregnancy, and moderate to severe toxemia, you should consult with your Obstetrician before seeking chiropractic care.
